Ray Liotta accepted the role of Officer Pete Davis to continue a run of performances as volatile or predatory characters early in his career. He had previously established this persona as the violent ex-con Ray Sinclair in Something Wild (1986) and as Henry Hill, a real-life violent gangster turned informant, in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990). Following this production, he played another sociopathic antagonist, Ryan Weaver, in the aviation thriller Turbulence (1997).
