On an episode of the Office Ladies podcast, B. J. Novak said the idea for the film first came to him when he saw a poster for another film titled Vengeance at a film festival. He said he was struck by the image of his own face on a poster bearing that name, and that because it was not the kind of work he was known for, he believed audiences would be surprised.

The scene in which Kansas City shows Ben her cracked phone screen and says she keeps it that way because it reminds her how she feels mirrors a similar scene in The Apartment (1960), in which Shirley MacLaine's character has a broken mirror in her apartment and explains to Jack Lemmon's character that she has not fixed it because it reminds her how she feels.

In a 2022 interview, Novak described his experience directing a feature film for the first time: "I was terrified of every detail and I reached out to a lot of my director friends, especially at every step of the way, for advice and encouragement. A friend of mine, Marc Webb, John Lee Hancock, whom I worked with, gave me tremendous wisdom. So it was really about turning to people for advice."

Shaw's three daughters — Paris Shaw (Isabella Amara), Kansas City Shaw (Dove Cameron) and the late Abilene Shaw (Lio Tipton) — are all named after cities. Moreover, they are all place names repeated across different locations. Besides Paris, far better known in France, there is also Paris, Texas (also the title of a groundbreaking 1980s Wim Wenders film); Kansas City is the name of a city in Kansas and also a city in Missouri; and Abilene, Texas, took its name from Abilene, Kansas, which in turn was named after a biblical place that is part of present-day Syria and Lebanon.

Whataburger is a popular fast food chain in Texas. When Texas native (and former Texas Tech quarterback), Super Bowl MVP winner and Super Bowl champion (x3) Patrick Mahomes signed his new contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, it also included the opening of many Whataburger locations in the Kansas City area.
