The real Yip Man never fought any British boxing champion. In real life, the man who fought a 240 lb Russian (not British) boxer in Hong Kong was actually Yip Man's student Wong Shun Leung ("Wong Leung" in the film). Wong Shun Leung won the fight by knockout with three punches.

While filming one scene, lead actor Darren Shahlavi (Twister) struck Sammo Hung (Master Hung Chun-Nam) in the face. He insisted on completing the shoot before going to the hospital. Not wanting his injuries to hold up the production, Hung spent five hours finishing the scene before going to the hospital to get four stitches.

During the fight with Twister, when Yip Man begins to gain the upper hand and shortly afterward finally wins, Yip Man is shown striking points that cause Twister's arm to lock at the elbow. This likely represents a form of Dim-Mak, a body of secret knowledge in Chinese martial arts that attacks pressure points and meridians and is said to incapacitate a person and sometimes even delay death.

Although Darren Shahlavi is shown in perfect health and peak condition in this film, he died of a heart attack only five years after it.

Ironically, Darren Shahlavi (Twister) was a great fan of Donnie Yen and, before him, of Ip Man's student Bruce Lee. Another irony is that the actor playing this fictional British champion was ethnically Iranian, a group once looked down upon along with other Asians by the British Empire.

At the end of the film, when the young boy (played by Dai-Yan Jiang) introduces himself to Ip Man as Bruce Lee (aka Lei Siu-Lung), the dialogue was dubbed from the original line and pronounced as Jun-Fan (Lee's birth name).

Yu-Hang To, who plays the character Hu Wei in this film, played the character Ip Man in The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (2010).

In the original version of the film, Jen and his wife had additional footage that turned this once fearless and bullying character into a henpecked, sheep-like husband. All that is seen in the revised version is his wife complaining about money.

Wong Shun-Leung was one of Ip Man's closest and most trusted students and was largely responsible for Bruce Lee's training at Ip Man's school. Because Bruce was not 100% Chinese (one of his grandparents was German), most of the other students kept away from him and refused to train with him, so Ip Man asked Wong to train Bruce on his behalf.

Many viewers may not realize they have seen Sammo Kam-Bo Hung in the most iconic martial arts film of all time. In the opening scene of Enter the Dragon (1973), Mr. Hung played the Shao-Lin student defeated by Bruce Lee.

On the rooftop across from the school there is an illuminated sign for Roamer watches. This is an affordable but high-quality Swiss watch brand that has been on the market since 1888.
- #012
Because Darren Shahlavi (Twister) was Iranian and also a lifelong admirer of martial arts, he was reportedly quite uncomfortable with the racist slurs he had to use in various scenes.

Donnie Yen and Ashton Chen had previously worked together on The Saint of Gamblers (1995).
