Director Anil Sharma saw the film Deathwish and wanted to remake it in Hindi. Sharma knew that if anyone else saw the film, they would remake it too, so he wanted to make his version quickly. He looked for a hero who would sign the film and give bulk dates. When he found no one, he changed the script to a female lead. He told the story to Hema Malini, who loved it and even wanted to produce the film. However, Hema could not give bulk dates immediately. Anil Sharma could not wait and approached Smita Patil. Smita liked the story and agreed to do the film. Sharma titled the film "Chingaariyan". A week before shooting was to begin, Sharma received a letter from Smita saying she could not do the film for personal reasons. Anil Sharma was shocked and surprised by her withdrawal. A week later, B. R. Chopra announced Aaj Ki Awaz with Smita Patil and Raj Babbar. Aaj Ki Awaaz was a remake of Deathwish.
