   When Billy Boyd was cast as Pippin in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson asked him to soften his Scottish accent. During filming, however, Jackson found that the comic scenes did not land the same way without the accent and allowed Boyd to continue with his natural Scottish accent. This decision led the production team back to Tolkien's text: in The Hobbit it was written that Bilbo Baggins's mother came from the Took family and that one of his ancestors invented the game of golf. Since golf has Scottish origins, the idea arose that the Tooks might in fact be Scottish, which allowed Boyd's accent to fit logically into the film's fictional world.
