As a child he was influenced by the bossa nova musical style, especially the work of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He was also keen on writing, wrote his first short story at the age of 18, and read European literature from a young age as well.
He wrote "Budapeste", a novel that won the Prêmio Jabuti, a Brazilian literary prize that enjoys critical national acclaim and can be compared to the Booker Prize.
