In November 1986, Deepak was involved in a life-threatening boat accident. He had gone to the UAE, to Dubai, to receive the Kala Ratan best actor award for the film Nikaah. During the boat trip he had an accident: the boat overturned and killed the other two passengers on board. Deepak's left leg was caught in the engine's propeller and his calf muscles were torn; he lost a great deal of blood. Fortunately he was rescued and taken to Rashid hospital, where he nearly had his leg amputated because of the numbness in it, as they feared gangrene. In the end they realized that what had numbed his leg was a painkiller. Deepak was sent back to India, where he gradually recovered and saved his leg from amputation. A month later his daughter was born.

He is often confused with the assistant director and producer Deepak Prashar. Deepak was the elder brother of director Pankaj Parashar. People also confuse the two Deepak Parashars because both have exactly the same name; the other Deepak died in the 1980s and was Naseeruddin Shah's best friend.

Chetan Anand signed Raaj Kumar, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Ved Thappar for the film Takht O Taj (1991). Chetan had first wanted to make the film in 1975 with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema (in place of Priya Rajvansh), and had even recorded the songs with Madan Mohan, but when he realized the budget would be too high he shelved the film. He later tried to revive it as "Jalal e Akbari" with Raaj Kumar, Deepak Parashar and Hema Malini, with the film now to be told from Akbar's point of view; this was in 1979. The film was shelved again and the lead actors also left the project. In 1982 Chetan Anand signed Dilip Kumar, Rishi Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure, but the film again never saw the light of day. In 1990 Chetan Anand spoke with Raaj Kumar about the film and asked him whether his son Puru Rajkumar would be interested in making the film and playing the role of Salim; Raaj Kumar stated that Puru was not ready to be an actor. Chetan finally revived the film in 1991 as Takht O Taj. Ved Thappar was initially to play Raaj Kumar's son because of his resemblance to the actor, but for commercial reasons Aamir Khan was signed for that role and Thappar for the role of Durjan Singh, which Ajit had first played in Mughal E Azam. The film's title was later changed to Mallika-e-Hind. The film was ultimately shelved because of Chetan's poor health. In 1993 there were stories that Chetan wanted to make the film with Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri, but the plans never materialized.
