After starring in Hotel Rwanda (2004), which dealt with the Rwandan genocide of the early 1990s, Don Cheadle became an activist to raise awareness of the genocide that took place in Sudan's Darfur region in the mid-2000s. In January 2005, he traveled to Sudan with five members of Congress to see refugee camps and meet genocide survivors. After returning, he reported on his trip for ABC News Nightline (1979).
