   During the silent era, Eugene Pallette was a handsome, athletic leading man and often a second lead in adventures or epics, including ones directed by D. W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille. By the late 1920s he had already gained an enormous amount of weight and began moving into character roles and comedy bits, and his gravelly, bullfrog voice proved enormously valuable in helping him land such parts with the arrival of sound.
