In 1984, his friend Johnny Depp accompanied him to the audition for A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Rather than being cast for a role, it was Depp whom director Wes Craven noticed, asking him if he wanted to read for a part. Haley would go on to play Freddy Krueger in the remake 26 years later (A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)).

In 2006 he made an unexpected comeback with roles in All the King's Men (2006) and Little Children (2006), earning praise from critics. Haley, who had not made a film since 1993 and had taken side jobs in Texas as a commercials director, limousine driver, furniture repairman, security guard and pizza deliveryman, was "just remembered" by director Steven Zaillian for his role in All the King's Men, and the ball started rolling.
