During the incident, she was allegedly hand-cuffed and dragged 40 feet across the floor, resulting in injuries including a dislocated elbow. She argued in court that, as the security guards' direct manager, Depp failed to intervene, even though he did not actively take part in the battery. In October 2012, it was decided that Eckert could seek compensation and punitive damages from Depp, with a trial date set for August 12, 2013. Depp ultimately settled with Eckert for an undisclosed sum.

Depp's family has lived in Kentucky for generations, and many of his ancestors have lived in the United States generally since the 1600s. His ancestors include English as well as Irish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Scottish, Welsh, French/French-Canadian, Dutch, Belgian Flemish and German. In 2013, Ancestry.com researchers determined that Depp has distant African ancestry; they traced his lineage back to Elizabeth Key, a biracial woman, c. 1630, who was the first woman of African descent in the North American colonies to successfully sue for her freedom from slavery (she also freed her son). Depp often stated that he believed he had Cherokee or Creek heritage, but this ancestor was never confirmed by any tribe or genealogist. Asked by James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio (1994) about the origin of his surname, Depp noted, perhaps jokingly, that his name means "idiot" in German.

Price co-starred with Depp in Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Lee co-starred with him in Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Corpse Bride (2005). Oddly, all of them were Tim Burton films.

In 2012, disabled UC Irvine medical professor Robin Eckert sued Depp and three security firms, claiming she had been attacked by his bodyguards at a concert in Los Angeles in 2011. During the incident, she was allegedly handcuffed and dragged 40 feet across the floor, resulting in injuries including a dislocated elbow.

In March 2016, Depp cut ties with his management company, the Management Group, and accused them of improperly managing his money. The Management Group later sued Depp for unpaid fees and countersued him for damages alleging that Depp was responsible for his own fiscal mismanagement. Depp filed new papers, including receipts from America's Internal Revenue Service (IRS), to have the countersuit dismissed. On July 16, 2018, Deadline reported that Depp and TMG had agreed to settle their lawsuit, and though details of the settlement were not released, both sides were reportedly happy with the outcome.

Depp's family has lived in Kentucky for many generations, and many of his ancestors have lived in the United States generally since the 1600s. His ancestry includes English as well as Irish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Scottish, Welsh, French/French-Canadian, Dutch, Belgian Flemish, and German. In 2013, researchers for Ancestry.com established that Depp has remote African ancestry; they traced his lineage to Elizabeth Key, a biracial woman born c. 1630, who was the first woman of African ancestry to successfully sue to emancipate herself from slavery in the North American colonies (she emancipated her son as well). Depp has frequently stated that he believes he has Cherokee or Creek heritage, although this ancestry has never been verified by any tribe or genealogists. Asked the origin of his last name by James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio (1994), Depp stated, perhaps jokingly, that his name means "idiot" in German.

Has something in common with actor Robert Englund, famed for portraying dream-stalking Freddy Krueger in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies. Both of them appeared in the first A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and both had played characters with blades for hands: Englund as Freddy Krueger, and Depp as the title character in Edward Scissorhands (1990). And, strangely, both of them were born in June, with their birthdays three days apart, and they share the same height, which is 5' 10".
