Since there were already several bunnies named Mary, management suggested she choose another name. Using actress Lauren Bacall as her inspiration, she shortened her middle name, Laurence, to Lauren and kept it.

   On October 21, 2000, Lauren Hutton was hospitalized after a motorcycle accident. She was setting out on a 160-kilometer ride alongside Dennis Hopper and Jeremy Irons, among other stars, to celebrate the planned Guggenheim motorcycle exhibition. Her condition was described as serious but stable, with numerous fractures, cuts and bruises on her leg. The accident could have been far more serious: Hopper insisted she wear motorcycle leathers, and Irons gave her a full-face helmet just minutes before the crash.
