Born Joseph Lane, the actor had to change his name in order to join Actors' Equity, because another actor was already registered under the same name at the time. He chose the name "Nathan" after the character Nathan Detroit in the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls. In an odd coincidence, he later played that role on Broadway in the acclaimed 1992 production, and the performance made his name.
