While visiting Laurence Olivier and his then-wife Vivien Leigh's house, Ralph Richardson was invited to examine some paintings stored in the attic. He somehow managed to fall; the attic floor collapsed under his weight and he fell through, landing on a bed in the room below (which then collapsed). He was unhurt but shaken, and was subsequently scolded at length by Vivien Leigh, whom he had already angered earlier in the day. He later said: "Vivien's anger had a reasonable basis and we must salute it. If you poke a tiger in its den twice, you shouldn't expect it to purr."
