After Hooda had various problems with the production team of Ram Gopal Varma's company, Mohit Ahlawat was brought in in his place. Many said Hooda would keep demanding changes to every script.

In 2006, Ram Gopal Varma planned a horror film titled "Badla" with Randeep Hooda and Urmila. All plans were cancelled so that Ram Gopal Varma could make RGV Ki Aag.

In 2003, Ram Gopal Varma signed Hooda for his passion project "Ek". Hooda was cast as the main villain opposite Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Nana Patekar and Sunil Shetty. The film was never made because of its excessive budget.

Hooda auditioned for Ab Tak Chappan. Varma told him to come back the next day. When Hooda returned, Varma told him he did not want to move him to Ab Tak Chappan. Instead, he wanted to sign him as the main villain in his next big film, "Ek". The second film was never made and the role in Ab Tak Chappan went to Nakul Vaid.

In 2005, Shyam Benegal was planning to shoot a large musical in Rajasthan. It was initially titled "Carmen" and later "Chamki Chameli". The role was first offered to Hooda, but his dates were blocked for Karma Confessions and Holi. It was later offered to Jimmy Shergill after the producers changed. The project was offered to Aishwarya, then to Kareema Kapoor.

In 2008, Rajkumar Santoshi wanted to direct a film adaptation of Asghar Wajahat's play "Jis Lahore Nahin Dekhya Woh Jamiya Nahin", a film starring Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan as his wife, with Salman Khan and Neil Nitin Mukesh also signed. Production designer Nitish Roy was preparing a set for the film in Hyderabad. Every lane, side street, vehicle and even electrical wires were being recreated. Extensive research was being done so that every detail of Lahore during the Partition period could be copied. Then in 2012 the cast was changed and Pankaj Kapur, Manisha Koirala and Shahid Kapoor joined the project, with Dutt, Khan, Balan and Mukesh all leaving. The film went nowhere. Then in 2014 Anil Kapoor and Armaan Jain signed on for the film. Once again, the project could not get off the ground. Then in 2015 Anil Kapoor left the film and, with Armaan Jain remaining in the film, Hooda signed on for the role. The film was eventually cancelled for unknown reasons.
