In a January 2013 newspaper interview, Richard Briers revealed that he had been diagnosed with emphysema in 2007 and had smoked roughly half a million cigarettes before quitting. According to his daughter Lucy, he quit immediately in 2001 after a routine chest X-ray showed that he would soon be confined to a wheelchair if he did not stop.
