In the 1980s, Jaya Prada and Sridevi were fierce rivals. They were of similar age, both from the South, and were seen as contenders for the coveted number one spot in Indian cinema. Producers loved pairing them in films because of their superb on-screen chemistry, yet in public each was cold toward the other. Once, during the shooting of Maqsad (1984), Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna locked the two warring queens in the same makeup room in the hope that they would reconcile. It did not happen; when they opened the door two hours later, they found the actresses sitting silently at opposite ends of the room. In 2015, however, Sridevi attended the wedding of Jayaprada's nephew and warmly held hands with her former rival. Over the 30 years in between, both had followed different paths in life; Sridevi had focused on motherhood and Jayaprada on politics, so they were no longer competing to rule the screen, and they managed to mend their relationship. Jaya Prada and Sridevi stayed in touch between 1998 and 2018. They worked together in Tohfa, Maqsad, Aulad and Main Tera Dushman. When Sridevi died by accidental drowning in 2018, a shocked Jayaprada called it "a bad dream" and spoke of how it had been Sridevi's wish that her daughters rule the screen as she had. She later went to Sridevi's home to pay her final respects to the family.
