As he was about to make his WWE debut against "good guy" Bret Hart, Austin based his "don't give a damn" character on a film called The Iceman, about a cold-hearted killer. He believed this would give him an advantage in playing the villain. His ex-wife Jeanie gave him the nickname "Stone Cold." However, when he faced Hart, he was shocked to see everyone cheering for him. From then on, Stone Cold Steve Austin became an "anti-hero" and would use his finishing move, the Stone Cold Stunner, on everyone who stepped into the ring with him, whether the person was good or bad.

Austin lost to Bret Hart, also known as Bret "The Hitman" Hart, in four of their encounters. Although Austin never defeated Bret Hart in a TV/PPV match, he did not lose all of their matches. Austin lost the Hart's Return match at Survivor Series 1996 and passed out in the "I Quit" match at Wrestlemania 13 (but never said he quit). However, at the April 1997 PPV, Austin won against Bret by DQ while the Hart Foundation interfered, and Austin had trapped Bret in Bret's own signature Sharpshooter. The next night on Raw, several WWF officials had to pull Austin off Bret in a "Street Fight," where Austin again left Bret trapped in the Sharpshooter for several minutes. Austin severely injured Bret's leg and allegedly attacked him in the ambulance after the match ended. Because it was a no-DQ match, Austin is considered to have won the match due to Bret's injury.

Austin says he is currently postponing the treatment to focus on establishing himself as a GM and will look into surgery when the time comes in the next few months.
