Walton Goggins initially turned down the role of Boyd Crowder on Justified (2010) because he worried the character would be a stereotype that portrayed Southern people negatively. At the producers' insistence, however, he agreed to shoot the pilot, in which the character actually died. When Boyd Crowder tested extremely well with audiences, the production team reshot the pilot's ending so the character survived and became a recurring role on the series. The decision proved a major turning point in Goggins's career and earned him a large fan base.
