A spokesperson for the series commented: "The rape scene is an integral part of the lead character's story and faithful to the text of the bestselling novel. The series raises important, complex questions about the consequences of sexual violence and explores the emotional and psychological consequences for her. About the rape scene in the first episode, Emily Watson commented: "It was an incredibly difficult day for everyone. We wanted it to be very sudden and very realistic. The people we spoke to described it as an out-of-body experience, and we tried to reflect that." She also stated that having worked closely with Chaplin in the past made filming the consensual sex scenes easier: "We'd known each other for a long time and we didn't want to hang around waiting for someone to shout 'Cut!', which usually happens. We planned and planned every detail. We wanted it to be realistic - in such a situation, what would it be like to be in a cupboard with a complete stranger? It was great. I've never laughed so much and it... felt empowering!"
