    The doorless elevators in the Berlin police headquarters are known as paternoster lifts. Such a lift consists of a continuously moving loop of slow-moving cabins, one half traveling upward and the other downward. These structures were common in pre-World War II European buildings, and a large share of them have been preserved in Germany, though most surviving lifts are no longer in public use because of obvious safety concerns.

    Production designer Uli Hanisch paid tribute to his famous colleague Ken Adam. Adam was born in Berlin as Klaus Hugo Adam and was Jewish; his father, Fritz Adam, was a shop owner and had to flee the Nazis in 1934, though some things had to be left behind. Among them was a planned huge shopping center whose construction Hanisch now uses for the set, which is why Adam & Sons can be seen on its Art Deco facade.

    Inspector Rath (Volker Bruch) watches his nephew build a model of a World War I Fokker D. VII fighter and tells him about the great flying aces Richthofen, Goering and Udet. Bruch played Lieutenant Lothar von Richthofen, the Red Baron's younger brother and a famous ace in his own right, in The Red Baron (2008).
