Although Larry Hagman appeared in seven episodes of the second season, the actor died during filming of the fifth episode. By rewriting the script and extending footage he had already shot with the help of some dialogue reused from earlier episodes, the producers managed to keep J. R. alive for two more episodes.

Larry Hagman's sudden death meant that no death scene was ever filmed for J. R. Producers examined every frame and every recorded audio segment with Hagman to find suitable pieces to use. Hagman's final shot came from an unused scene in an earlier episode in which J. R. learns that John Ross and Pamela slept together. It was originally filmed at SouthFork, but the background was digitally removed and replaced with the red backdrop of the hotel room where J. R. was killed.
