The VHS releases that premiered in the 1990s included an extended pilot episode and an extended final episode. The US DVD set contains the versions as broadcast.

In the original Dark Shadows, Maggie Evans and Josette were identical in appearance. In this version, it was Victoria who looked identical to Josette.

Lysette Anthony, who played Angelique in this revival of Dark Shadows, also appeared in Trilogy of Terror 2 (1996), another Dan Curtis production.

Ben Cross, Ely Pouget and Veronica Lauren are the only cast members who played a single role. In addition, Ely Pouget does not appear in the 1790 flashbacks, while apart from Ben Cross and Veronica Lauren, who played Barnabas and Sarah in both time periods, the other members of the cast played dual roles.

Joanna Going was part of the voice cast for an audio story recorded for Big Finish Productions with the original (1966) Dark Shadows cast. It was first released on CD.

This new series was a way for Dan Curtis to correct the past by having Victoria arrive by train as she did in the original, but this time she arrives at the point where Barnabas Collins is part of the story. Originally it took several seasons for Barnabas to be invented for the series. Victoria's story focused mostly on the job of looking after David; before the series dealt with a vampire, it was more of a dark crime thriller.

Rebecca Staab, who played Daphne Collins in the 1991 revival of Dark Shadows, appeared in Love Potion No. 9 in 1992, where she has two different scenes with Tate Donovan in a bar: the first time she tries to pick him up as a bet made by her friends, and the second time she tries to pick him up while under the spell of the love potion.

Five of the actors in this series also appeared in the Star Trek franchise. Michael Cavanaugh (Sheriff George Patterson/Andre DuPres) appeared in a 1990 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987). Both Stefan Gierasch (Dr. Dave Woodard/Joshua Collins) and Jean Simmons (Elizabeth Collins Stoddard/Naomi Collins) appeared in separate 1991 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Julianna McCarthy (Mrs. Johnson/Abigail Collins) took on the recurring Cardassian role of Mila in the last four seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). Ben Cross (Barnabas Collins) played Spock's father Sarek in the rebooted Star Trek (2009) film. Six actors from the original series also appeared in the Star Trek franchise.

Lysette Anthony later said she was glad the series was cancelled because she did not want to be stuck on it. She thought it was quite bad and that the acting was terrible.
