In an interview, Nathan Fillion said that when Joss Whedon called to offer him the role of Captain Hammer, Fillion saw Whedon's name on his caller ID, picked up immediately and said "Yes!" Whatever Whedon might have been calling about, the answer was going to be yes.

The Stun Ray that Dr. Horrible later turns into his Death Ray is the stun weapon held upside down by Alliance soldiers in Firefly (2002).

On the DVD, the ELE warning that flashes on screen during the FBI warning reads: "This video disc is intended for Evil purposes only and any non-evil use will result in immediate self-loathing. Australia seems to be the standard price for world domination. In Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Dr. Horrible hopes his plans to rule the world might upset Penny, the love of his life. But he thinks that giving her Australia will dry her tears and therefore make her more cooperative. In Superman II, Lex Luthor offers to cooperate with General Zod's plans to rule the world and expects Australia to be given to him in return for his efforts.
