The series' protagonist, Kenny Powers, is named after a real-life American stuntman who tried to jump part of the St. Lawrence River in a rocket-powered Lincoln Continental. The jump was designed by Canadian stuntman Ken Carter. When the time came, Carter backed out, and the crew contacted Kenny Powers, who then attempted the jump and failed dramatically.

The creators offered Walton Goggins a role in the series' third season, but scheduling made it impossible. Goggins would, however, go on to appear in McBride's other HBO shows Vice Principals and The Righteous Gemstones.
