David Alvarez plays Gael Rodriguez, a dancer who is persuaded to return to ballet after taking a break from dance, mirroring Alvarez's own career path. As a child he earned a full scholarship to train at New York's prestigious American Ballet Theatre, and during that period he was one of three boys who alternated in the lead role in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot the Musical; all three shared the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. After Billy Elliot closed and Alvarez graduated from high school, however, he left show business entirely and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a sniper in the 25th Infantry Division for two and a half years. He returned to the stage as a swing/ensemble member in the 2015 revival of On the Town and in the Mexican production of Billy Elliot, then left acting again to enroll as an undergraduate at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. He later won the role of Bernardo in Steven Spielberg's film West Side Story (2021), returning once more to dance and performance.

Although Lou de Laâge (Cheyenne) had some dance training as a child, she is not a professional-level ballet dancer. As she told Esther Zuckerman in a May 2025 interview with Backstage Magazine, "When I act, it's just me. But when I dance, it's my double, Constance Devernay-Laurence (who also plays Melanie on screen), so I have to watch her and steal everything I can from her. What I have to learn is the way she dances. I had to take from the best, and she was better than me."

Jack (Luke Kirby) opposes taking funding from Crispin Shamblee (Simon Callow) and naming a ballet theater after him, because Shamblee is an arms and oil magnate whose politics are entirely different from Jack's. Shamblee's character is a clear reference to oil and gas tycoon David H. Koch (1940-2019), one of New York City Ballet's leading philanthropists and the namesake of the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Like Shamblee, Koch was an enthusiastic fan and supporter of ballet, but Koch was also a major spreader of false conspiracy theories targeting Democratic candidates and politicians (most notably Barack Obama) and spent more than $100 million on an ultimately unsuccessful effort to prevent Obama's re-election in 2012.

One of the shows previously created by Étoile's showrunners (Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino) was Gilmore Girls (2000). That series featured a significant storyline in which one of the main characters (Rory Gilmore) received a Birkin Bag, the handmade leather tote from French luxury goods supplier Hermès that is one of the world's most sought-after status symbols. The bag was originally named after the English/French actress, singer and style icon Jane Birkin (1946-2023), who had a contradictory relationship with it, sometimes carrying it and sometimes asking that her name be removed from it. One of Étoile's stars, Charlotte Gainsbourg (who plays Geneviève Lavigne), is Jane Birkin's daughter.
