Scattered subliminal puzzle pieces flash on screen for a single frame. They usually appear where viewers are unlikely to notice them, such as in the first frame of a shot or in a brighter part of the frame. The pilot contains no puzzle piece, while the others contain between three and eight. In the third, the exorcist character has a line: "We're fighting the worst enemy in the world, and their only weakness is that they reveal themselves in symbols and numbers. It's not in their hands. God draws straight lines. The devil draws puzzles and anagrams."

The series uses many Dutch angles for its camera shots, which involves tilting the camera on its roll axis so that vertical lines are angled toward the side of the frame or the horizon line is not parallel to the bottom of the camera frame. This cinematic technique is normally used to depict psychological unease or tension in the filmed subject, fitting the series' theme.

In the first episode of the fourth season, the particle accelerator incident that befalls Ben (and affects him for the rest of the series) has a historical precedent. In 1978, Russian particle physicist Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski was the victim of a radiation accident in which a high-energy proton beam from a particle accelerator passed through his head. Although Bugorski received far more than a lethal dose of radiation, he survived despite numerous medical side effects and, as of 2023, is still alive. Due to Soviet and post-Soviet Russian secrecy surrounding nuclear accidents, the incident was not made public for more than a decade after it occurred, and Bugorski repeatedly failed to obtain disability status from the Russian government to treat his medical problems, including seizures caused by the radiation exposure.
