In the DVD commentary, David Simon recalled Neal Jones's somewhat unusual audition for the role of Sergeant Major Sixta. According to the story, Jones entered the audition room, immediately began screaming his lines unintelligibly — just as his character does — and then left the room without saying another word. As he opened the door to leave, he winked at casting director Alexa L. Fogel, who realized she had found the right actor for the role.
