Alastor was a Southern radio host and serial killer from New Orleans, Louisiana. He died in 1933, but the cause of his death — as established from the full show's release onward — was being shot by a hunter after being mistaken for a deer, which explains his deer-like appearance in both the pilot and the prequel comics and the X that appears on his forehead when he uses his powers.

Angel Dust named himself after the drug of the same name (phencyclidine) because he died of an overdose. It was revealed on a livestream that his real name is Anthony. The first appearance of his real name is on his contract, as seen in episode 4.

Sir Pentious was originally meant to be a one-off villain for the pilot and never appear again. However, after surprisingly positive reactions from fans, Vivienne Medrano fell in love with him and restructured the story to make him the second guest to move into the hotel.

A prequel web comic was published on the series' main website telling Angel Dust's backstory up to his arrival at the Happy Hotel. Initially the website required a password that hinted at what Charlie's surname was. Viewing the web comic required a password that hinted at the name of Angel's adult film. However, the password-protected sections of the website have since been removed, and the comic can be accessed without a password.

The soles of Alastor's shoes have deer hoof prints. This may have been inspired by the real-life "heifer-heels" worn by smugglers during Prohibition to mislead police who found their footprints. It also fits his deer-like appearance.

In a Q&A, series creator Vivienne Medrano stated that the rivalry between Lucifer and Alastor in episode 5 over Charlie's father-figure position stems from Alastor's observation that Lucifer wants to connect with Charlie. Since Alastor sees Lucifer as a threat/rival, he starts this rivalry to get under Lucifer's skin rather than out of any genuine desire for fatherhood.
