Paramount Network postponed the series premiere because of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. After the mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, the channel cancelled all plans to air the series, and then decided in October 2018 to release a heavily edited season.

On September 12, 2012, Bravo announced a Heathers (1989) reboot unrelated to an earlier announcement from Sony Pictures Television. The story would have continued 20 years after the events of the film, with Veronica returning to her home in Sherwood, Ohio, along with her teenage daughter, who has to contend with a new generation of mean girls — the daughters of the two surviving Heathers, all of them named Ashley. Neither Winona Ryder nor Christian Slater was involved in the project. However, in August 2013 Bravo declined to order the series.

However, on June 1, 2018, it was announced that Paramount Network had dropped the series due to concerns about its content following recent school shootings in the United States. The series' producers were reported to have begun shopping it to other broadcasters, and writing was reported to be nearly complete for a possible second season set in a completely different setting from the first season and the original film. As of July 16, 2018, both Netflix and Freeform were reported to have passed on the series.
