James Arness said that the role of the mountain man Zeb was extremely physically demanding, and that what necessitated the series' cancellation was that he had to have surgery on his bad leg. ABC was ready to renew it.

This miniseries starred James Arness, who had played Marshal Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke (1955). The narrator was William Conrad, who originated the role of Marshal Matt Dillon on the radio program "Gunsmoke."

Bruce Boxleitner and Kathryn Holcomb, who played the siblings Luke and Laura, began dating when the series started in 1976 and married in May 1977. They were married for 10 years and had 2 children. After the divorce, Bruce married Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert and had one more child. Melissa's guest starred alongside him on Babylon 5.

The Macahans is the name of the TV film. How the West Was Won is the name of the series. Season 1 of the series is on DVD, with the pilot The Macahans as a bonus feature on the second (two) disc. So it is best to start by watching this pilot on the second disc before going back to watch the series.

The family in the series was named "the Macahans," while in the film of the same name the family was named "the Rawlings."

The character played by Richard Kiley, who settled down with a woman, had children, and so on, was based on the trapper played by James Stewart (named Linus Rawlings) in How the West Was Won (novel and film). Bruce Boxleitner's character was played by George Peppard. And the James Arness character, who is not in the book or the film… Kiley's character's invented brother… is basically the original James Stewart trapper character, if he had not been married.

A season and a half of the series plays like an ongoing miniseries with interconnected, continuing storylines, the way "binge shows" do now. Eventually, especially in the third season, it became more episodic.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON was also a novel by Lou Cameron (1924-2010). This novel was awarded the Golden Spur Award by the Western Writers of America.

Bruce Boxleitner and Elyssa Davalos appear as a couple in the second season. Bruce was to play, alongside Timothy Bottoms, in the East of Eden miniseries the character that Elyssa's father, Richard Davalos, played opposite James Dean in the famous 1955 film.
