Zombies Liv (Rose McIver) and Blaine (David Anders) are shown eating brains in nearly every episode. In interviews, McIver and Anders repeatedly stated that the "brains" are made of gelatin and have a very unpleasant taste; both actors said they used a spit bucket after every brain-eating scene.

The main character's name, Olivia "Liv" Moore, is a pun on her zombie status (after her death she gets to "live more").

Producer Rob Thomas often references the more famous Rob Thomas (lead singer of the rock band Matchbox Twenty) in his shows as a joke, in a derogatory context. In this series he continues that tradition, first by having the rock star himself appear as a guest (episode 2.19, Salivation Army (2016)) and then by having his brain eaten by angry zombies.
