Adam Klaus was originally to be named Adam Faust, but the name had to be changed when checks by the BBC Legal Department revealed that a real-life magician already used it.

The Jonathan Creek sports jacket that gave the character his name actually belonged to Alan Davies. He wore it on set on the first day of filming, and everyone agreed it suited the character perfectly.

Adam Klaus was played by Anthony Head in the first episode. Although the character was intended to appear in every episode, he was not seen again for the rest of the first series. From the second series onward, Stuart Milligan took over the role because of Head's part in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997).

The windmill Jonathan Creek lives in is called King's Mill, or Vincent's Mill, and was built in 1879 in the town of Shipley, West Sussex, about 6 or 7 miles south of Horsham, England. It once belonged to the writer Hilaire Belloc, a Frenchman who held British citizenship. It has been open to the public at various points in its history but has been closed since July 2009.

Alan Davies said he was the 38th person to audition for the lead role. Those considered included Paul Bown, Angus Deayton, Douglas Hodge, Peter Howitt, Alex Jennings, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Hugh Laurie, Rik Mayall and Nigel Planer. Lyndhurst and Laurie turned the role down.
