In the book, only Izzy runs away from home after starting the fire to begin a better life. In the miniseries adaptation, Izzy nearly sets her room on fire but her siblings stop her at the last moment. However, after Izzy leaves the house in tears because Elena finally admits she never wanted her, Lexie, Trip and Moody set their rooms on fire and eventually the entire house as retaliation against their mother.

In Celeste Ng's source novel, Ng deliberately kept Mia Warren's race ambiguous and undefined. In this adaptation, with Kerry Washington cast as Mia Warren, the character became Black. In an April 2020 interview with Terry Gross on National Public Radio's "Fresh Air," Washington said: "When I first met the author Celeste Ng, she actually admitted to me that she had always thought of Mia as a Black woman and was interested in the idea of writing Mia as a Black woman. But she didn't feel she had the authoritative voice to do it properly. So she was a bit ambiguous about her race in the novel. So it was exciting for us to be on the same page as Celeste about diving into the places where she wanted to expand her book in ways that already lived within her."
