The scenes of Longmire's cabin were shot at Valles Caldera in New Mexico's Jemez Mountains. The caldera is a volcanic crater 14 miles wide. It is now a national preserve. Many Western films have used the location, including The Missing (2003) and The Lone Ranger (2013).

Appearing on Conan (2010), Jeff Garlin promoted Longmire (2012) by showing a clip from the series instead of one from his own show, The Goldbergs (2013). He explained: "'Goldberg' became a big hit, the number 3 comedy on TV. 'Longmire' needs help. I love 'Longmire' and I want this show to continue."

Wyoming license plates carry numbers from 1 to 23 on the far left, representing the state's 23 counties. This means residents can tell which part of the state a vehicle comes from by looking at those numbers, something everyone in Wyoming knows. The plates on the vehicles in the series begin with "24," a county that does not exist.

In the books (long before the TV series was cast), Longmire often dreams of having classic film actor Robert Taylor cast to play him. Coincidentally, a different (and arguably better) Robert Taylor was cast in the lead role of the series.

The series is set in a fictional Wyoming county but is filmed in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, and Las Vegas, New Mexico, USA. The sheriff's office is in the plaza at 1811 Hot Springs Boulevard, Las Vegas, New Mexico, directly across from the historic and famous The Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas, New Mexico, 230 Plaza Street. Many scenes were also shot in the town of Pecos, New Mexico, in the Pecos Wilderness north of the town of Pecos, and some scenes at the Espanola, New Mexico casino.

The Crow nation's name in their own language is Apsáalooke, or variants including Absaroka.

Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) carries a custom-gripped 1911 .45ACP Colt Government Model as his duty weapon. Unlike most people who choose to carry an M1911, he carries it in Condition 2 (magazine inserted, round chambered, hammer down). This is not necessarily a technical error. There was a time when this was considered an acceptable carry method, but most M1911 users today do not recommend it for safety reasons, opting instead for Condition 1 (magazine inserted, round chambered, hammer cocked, safety on), the way the pistol was designed to be carried.

Walt's beer of choice is Rainier, named in honor of Mount Rainier in Washington State. Longmire is the name of a historic area within Mount Rainier National Park; it was named after James Longmire and his son David (1844-1925). In 1853, when David was nine years old, James Longmire led a wagon train to the Tacoma, Washington area. Between 1871 and 1878, David Longmire bought extensive land in the Wenas Valley area of Yakima County, Washington State (large enough to provide a farmhouse for seven children, two stepchildren and, upon his death, at least fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren), and lived there for more than fifty years, becoming one of Yakima County's leading citizens.

Walt Longmire wears an "RCA #30" hat made by the O'Farrell Hat Co. in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. The O'Farrell logo can be seen on the inner lining in Season 4, Episode 1.

In the series pilot, the first digit on the sheriff's vehicle plate, "5," indicates the vehicle is from Albany County, Wyoming, USA. This is where Laramie, Wyoming, and the state's only university, the University of Wyoming, are located. Laramie is in southeastern Wyoming near the Colorado border. The Snowy Range mountains lie just west of the city. Interior scenes were shot at the Greer Garson Studios on the campus of Santa Fe University of Art and Design, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.

The Wyoming of this series appears far more violent than the real Wyoming. Nearly every episode features a murder, often multiple murders (one episode featured the killing of 8 people). That would mean roughly 13 to 39 murders a year in and around Absaroka County alone. Yet the average for the entire state is only about 14 a year.

"Fracking" is short for hydraulic fracturing, the natural gas extraction process that is the subject of several episodes involving the energy company where Vic's husband works. It is also a fictional word used in Battlestar Galactica (1978) in place of the F-bomb, and it continued to be used in the 2004 update, Battlestar Galactica (2004). Katee Sackhoff, who plays deputy sheriff Victoria "Vic" Moretti on Longmire, played Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on Battlestar Galactica from 2004 to 2009. Other Battlestar Galactica (2004) actors who appear in Longmire include two Cylon characters connected to Starbuck: Michael Trucco, who plays her husband Sam, and Callum Keith Rennie, who plays Leoben.

Longmire's cast connects to many other series and films. Graham Greene, who plays Malachi, appeared in The Green Mile and in many other Westerns featuring Native Americans, and Michael Jeter also appeared in The Green Mile and in Open Range alongside Kevin Costner (who played the lead in Yellowstone) and Robert Duvall (who played the lead in Lonesome Dove). Graham Greene took a Native American role in Dances With Wolves with Kevin Costner and also played another Native American character in the 1994 production Lonesome Dove: The Series. Robert Duvall appeared in The Godfather: Part II, in which Harry Dean Stanton had a brief role, and like Graham Greene and Michael Jeter, Harry Dean Stanton appeared in The Green Mile. Considered together, these comparisons show how many actors are linked through films of the same genre.

Gerald MacRaney (Barlowe Conally) and Peter Weller (Lucius Conally) play brothers. They were in fact born less than three months apart. Weller was born on 24.06.47 and MacRaney on 19.08.47; too long apart to be twins, and too close together for separate births.
