Director and screenwriter Todd Haynes decided that every scene should be from Mildred's point of view, and therefore wanted Kate Winslet to appear in every scene of the five-hour miniseries. Winslet publicly stated that this was her most difficult shoot since Titanic (1997), spending about 18 weeks on set.

The miniseries follows the book very closely, at times word for word. It differs greatly from the first and so far only other Mildred Pierce adaptation (1945), which starred Joan Crawford.

Seven-time Oscar nominee (and one-time winner) Kate Winslet shares the distinction of being nominated alongside two of her female co-stars. For Georgia (1995), Mare Winningham and Winslet competed for Best Supporting Actress in 1995, while for Frozen River (2008), Melissa Leo and Winslet competed for Best Actress in 2008 for The Reader (2008). Neither won for the first, and Winslet won the second.

Mildred Pierce is left to raise her two children alone after her husband cheats on her. This mirrored Kate Winslet's own reported family situation, in which her husband had allegedly cheated on her and she remained the single parent of two children.
