    After long-time stars James Bolam, Alun Armstrong and Amanda Redman left in 2012/13, leaving Dennis Waterman as the last original star, the show's popularity declined and the BBC decided to cancel it in 2015. Waterman had publicly voiced his unhappiness at the loss of his original co-stars as well as the scripts of later series, which he saw as poor quality, and had already decided to leave the show before the decision to quit. The cancellation was made by the BBC.

    A ten-episode series was filmed between November and June, with the production schedule pushed back to Christmas. A block of two episodes was filmed together, and blocks were separated by a week in which the cast took part in a script read-through for the next two-episode block.
