The mystery was addressed and resolved through dialogue in the second episode. In a flashback in which Sam and Cal (then a US senator rather than president) attend the same symposium speech about an approaching global catastrophe, Cal asks how Cal's father is doing, and Cal replies: "Still a slight sign of dementia. But he's still him. He still crushes me with barbs like 'You think you're Dean Martin walking around with your dick out. You're not Dean. You're a joke. You're Peter Lawford.' You're only in the group because of who you're related to. Yeah. Yeah. This Christmas morning, remember. My dear father. He says… by the way he says you're Sinatra. Open leader. One."
