In the early stages of the 2020 pilot season, Katey Sagal was one of the most in-demand actresses at ABC. Since 2019, when the network ordered her comedy vehicle Nana to pilot, she had ranked high among Sons of Anarchy (2008) and Married with Children (1987) alumni. The project did not move forward, but ABC continued to work with Sagal, using her for airings of Grand Hotel (2019) and The Conners (2018) and sending her nearly every one of its hottest scripts to choose from. She chose Rebel.
