In a 2024 interview with Vulture, Steven Zaillian discussed his visual approach to a key scene, the happy accident that resulted from it, and a general stylistic rule for the shoot: "Robert Elswit knows how much I hate a clear blue sky. But when we shot the scene where Tom meets Dickie and Marge on the beach, there was nothing we could do about it. It was sunny. I wanted to put the camera up very high and photograph them lying on the sand. In doing so, and having Tom walk past them, his shadow fell over them. And Robert said, 'That would never happen in a cloudy sky.'… When we shot outdoors, day or night, there was an invariable rule that we could wet down the streets, because it instantly brought film noir imagery to mind. And because it's a little more beautiful than a dry street."
