    According to Rob Lowe, during the filming of the final confrontation with Kurt Barlow, Rutger Hauer went off-script but stayed in character and launched into a strange, rambling monologue about wanting to be a cowboy. Director Mikael Salomon was unimpressed, quickly shouted "Cut!" and asked Hauer what he was doing. After a very tense negotiation, Hauer agreed to stick to the original script, but he had not bothered to learn the two-page original speech he had written, so he had to read it from cue cards.

His death came only a few weeks before the 40th anniversary of the death of James Mason, who died in July 1984.
