According to showrunner Dave Andron, they aimed to make the series' wardrobe specific to the 1980s, but decided to avoid items like giant shoulder pads that would be too distracting for modern viewers.

According to the most widely accepted account, the Crips were first founded in 1969 under the leadership of Raymond Washington. Made up of students attending Washington High School in South Los Angeles, whose school color was blue, the gang grew quickly and preyed on citizens. Other gangs began to form to defend themselves against the Crips. Two of these gangs were the Brims and the Pirus. In the 1970s the Brims and Pirus formed a self-protection alliance that became the gang now known as the Bloods. One claimed definition of the word CRIP is the abbreviation of Community Response In Progress.
