Throughout the series, Amy Sedaris was still working as a waitress at Mary's Fish Camp because she enjoyed having a real job. She treated observing customer interactions as character study and took particular pleasure in it when customers got annoyed. She eventually had to quit because fans would recognize her from the show and want to sit in her section.

Jerri's father Guy was killed off in the second season when the creators ran out of ideas for the joke that Guy never moved on camera. They described Guy as a character who went from the easiest to write to the hardest to write.

The characters Jerri Blank and Principal Blackman got their names from the script, but in an unusual way. The script notes described the principal as a black man, and the writers had not yet come up with a surname for Jerri, so they left it blank ("Jerri _______"). These descriptions appealed to the writers, so they were used as the characters' actual names in the production.

The first and second seasons were shot in an abandoned elementary school that also contained a strange padded room that appeared to belong to an insane asylum. That room inspired the writers to introduce the violent-student element in the episode "Bogie Nights," which features the Violent Students' Lounge. The scene in question required very little set decoration.
