In the fifth episode of the third season, Martin, played by Paul Reiser, watches the 1982 film Diner on television. The scene he is watching actually shows a much younger Paul Reiser in his first film role.

When the show's third and final season was announced, it emerged that Alan Arkin would not return and had made it clear to the producers of the second season that it would be his last. Asked why his character was not written out in the second-season finale, sources on the show explained that it was unclear whether there would be a third season, so they chose to give the character a somewhat happy ending in case they did not return.
