Paul Theroux's influences for Allie Fox were Huckleberry Finn's father, Jim Jones and [the founder of Mormonism] Joseph Smith. The character also contained elements of Paul's own father, which is a coincidence since he was also Justin Theroux's grandfather. In an interview, Justin recalled that his grandfather took him dumpster diving.

Interesting contrasts between the 2021 series and the 1986 film. Harrison Ford is more manic as Allie, while Justin Theroux is more calculating. As Margot, Helen Mirren is more accommodating and devoted to Allie than the more touchy and independent Melissa George. The family dynamic is quite different - River Phoenix and Gabriel Bateman both played 14-year-old Charlie at age 15, but River, as the eldest of 4 children, is closer to his father and initially more obedient, while Gabriel is the baby of only 2 children, and Logan Polish plays 16-year-old Dina, who is likewise touchy and independent. The 2021 Fox family has many more dramatic trials to overcome, but the 1986 Foxes live more in the wilderness. The 1986 film tells the story in a single 2-hour film, while the Apple series version consists of two 7-episode series with a 2-year gap between shoots, even though the storyline is continuous, which creates some interesting dynamics as the two young actors are now 2 years older and have almost outgrown their on-screen ages.
