Jim Henson was Kermit's original puppeteer and voice. After Jim's death in 1990, Steve Whitmire, who joined the Muppets in 1978, accepted an offer from Jim's son Brian Henson to take over the role of Kermit the Frog. Steve performed Kermit from 1990 until October 2016, when Disney fired him from the role, partly because Whitmire had upset the show's performers during production of this series by giving detailed notes on what the Muppet characters would and would not do. After Whitmire's departure, the role of Kermit went to Matt Vogel.

Some viewers were shocked to hear that Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog had broken up for the 2015 series, but older fans may not have been surprised. On May 4, 1990, Jim Henson appeared for the last time on The Arsenio Hall Show (1989), in the second season's one hundred forty-fourth episode, "Episode #2.144." When asked about Piggy, Jim puppeteered Kermit and had him say that things between him and Piggy were not going well and that the famous lifestyle had contributed to them growing apart. Jim then died on May 16, 1990. The new 2015 show opens by showing viewers that Kermit's famous lifestyle was the last straw and that Kermit broke up with her.

Early in the fourth episode, "Pig Out," Fozzie delivers his behind-the-scenes monologue. In the background, the Swedish Chef licks the donuts on the food table and puts them back. Early in the tenth episode, "Single All the Way," the Chef does this for the third time this season, but with a Christmas cookie. As Fozzie approaches to talk to the Chef, the Chef licks the cookie and puts it back. This is a reference to Ariana Grande, who is known for this kind of behavior.
