Patty Duke was only sixteen when production began, so the series was shot at Chelsea Studios in Manhattan, New York City. New York's child labor laws were more liberal than California's, particularly the state's Coogan Law, named after child actor Jackie Coogan, which governed working conditions for child performers. Shooting in New York allowed Duke to work more hours per day, an advantage since she carried much of the series. Duke turned eighteen during filming of the final season (1965 to 1966), and although the season began in New York, the entire production moved to Hollywood at the end of the season, to Duke's dismay, as she wanted to stay in New York. The show's setting nonetheless remained the same Brooklyn Heights neighborhood throughout.

ABC wanted all of its black-and-white shows to move to color production. United Artists asked for more money to make the change. The network decided it would be more cost-effective to develop a new color show instead.
