The Protectors was one of Gerry Anderson's few non-science-fiction works and his first such project since Crossroads to Crime (1960).

Character actor Nigel Green made one of his last television appearances as a guest star on The Protectors. Soon afterwards, the underrated actor died tragically in May 1972.
