Jake Lacy claimed that, because of the COVID-19 production bubble, the cast of Season 1 actually stayed in the same hotel as their characters and ate every meal together in the same restaurant.

Although HBO designed the series as a one-season limited miniseries, it renewed the show for a second season. The series is said to be an anthology in which each season features new characters. HBO had previously done this with its True Detective (2014) series, which was widely acclaimed.

The series creator, Mike White, also had a deeply closeted father (Mel White, an evangelical pastor and ghostwriter for Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell), but unlike Mark's father, Mel (as of July 2021) is still alive and now happily married to his husband. Mel and Mike are on good terms and twice teamed up as contestants on the reality competition The Amazing Race, which often took them to the tropical locations depicted in The White Lotus.

While filming on a yacht in Thailand, Jason Isaacs walked into a sliding glass door without realising it was closed. Fortunately the glass did not break, but Isaacs was briefly knocked unconscious and suffered a cut on his forehead, which was later removed during editing.
