This is the first Titanic film to show the ship breaking in two at a shallow angle. New research has shown that Titanic split at a lower angle than once thought, not at the high angle depicted in James Cameron's 1997 film.

This is the first Titanic film to accurately depict the death of John Jacob Astor. He was crushed when Titanic's first funnel collapsed. James Cameron's 1997 film showed him on the Grand Staircase as the dome collapsed and water poured in, an event that occurs in the film immediately after the first funnel collapses.

Sophie Winkleman plays Titanic passenger and actress Dorothy Gibson. At one point the Countess of Manton (played by Geraldine Somerville) refuses to sit with Gibson in a lifeboat because of her low birth and choice of career. In real life Sophie Winkleman is also known as Lady Frederick Windsor. Her husband is the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and 49th in line to the British throne.

One of the Irish passengers, Patrick A. O'Keefe, was a young man who boarded Titanic at the age of 21. Only a few days before boarding Titanic he had terrible dreams that the ship would sink and nearly cancelled his ticket. He decided to board anyway. When Titanic sank he managed to survive on collapsible lifeboat B. He died in Manhattan in 1939 at the age of 48 from unknown causes.

The character Dorothy Gibson was a real-life American film actress. As a survivor, she soon appeared in Saved from the Titanic (1912), during which she suffered a nervous breakdown and retired from films. The film was a sensation but was lost in a studio fire in 1914.
